Perth has no shortage of fabulous vendors, but every now and again, someone shines from the crowd. I remember meeting Jemma a few years ago and seeing her work, I knew straightaway that I wanted our couples to meet her and choose her to be their wedding photographer.
On the surface, she is calm, softly spoken, and kind. Scratch beneath the surface and you’ll meet a passionate creative dedicated to her craft, her clients, and her family.
Living down south enables her to be across weddings in the Margaret River Region, but she also loves the drive to Perth. I hope you enjoy this interview with Perth’s own Jemma Keech.
Q. Can you please give a brief description of yourself and your business?
A. My name is Jemma, and I’m a fine-art film photographer specialising in Weddings and Portraiture. I’m lucky enough to have been photographing Weddings for many years and adore it. I shoot a mix of film and digital and love creating images basked in soft delicious light and pastel colours. I am a Mum of two beautiful boys (Louis and Tom) and a very cheeky 6 month old Golden Retriever called Sonny.
Q. What led you to owing a photography business?
A. After finishing my BA of Design, I started as a photographer at The Sunday Times and then made my way to being a full-time Fashion photographer. After a while I felt I need a change. A few girlfriends from school (Samm Blake, Arlene Bax and Sarah Kate Dorman) were all Wedding Photographers and loved it so I thought I would give it a try! Wedding Photography turned very quickly into my passion. That was 12 years ago and I’ve never looked back. The time has gone so quickly, but I love that I can look back at my work from a few years ago and the photos are still beautiful and haven’t dated. I want my couples to look at their photos in years to come and still be totally in love with them.
Q. What is your favourite thing about being a wedding photographer?
A. I think knowing that I’m capturing beautiful, once in a lifetime moments for my couples is pretty amazing! Being invited to spend the day with a couple on their Wedding Day is very special! In many cases, I’ve taken their engagement photos, their wedding photos and then their baby photos. It’s such an honour to see how families grow and to be able to capture it for future generations.
Q. What is your favourite part of a wedding day?
A. I would say getting ready and also portrait time. I love the nervous excitement, the anticipation, the fun banter and all the prettiness of getting ready (both guys and girls!). Equally I LOVE creating beautiful portraits for my couples. After the ceremony and family photographs are over, everyone normally breathes a little sigh of relief…….. perhaps has a glass of bubbles, relaxes and really starts to enjoy the day. I love capturing these moments and here in WA we are blessed to have incredible golden afternoon light – makes for my favourite time of the Wedding Day!
Q. How far away from their wedding should a couple book you?
A. Generally, my couples book around 12-18 months in advance. If you have secured a date with your venue, I would strongly recommend the next step being your photographer. Especially between the months of November to April.
Q. Why do you love working with a wedding stylist?
A. I see that the role of a wedding stylist can encompass many things – but overall (very, very generally speaking) they make everything look very pretty and run smoothly. This in turn makes my job a lot easier. I love the different creative eye that a wedding stylist brings to creating and designing and that can really lift your wedding styling to the next level.
Q. What do you love to do in your spare time?
A. My family and I made the move from Scarborough to the South West about 3 years ago. Every other weekend I am shooting either in the South West or in Perth. When I’m not at a wedding, I love going to the beach with our boys (and puppy in tow), gardening or entertaining. We are in the process of landscaping our front garden – so I am very excited for Spring and getting stuck into planting!
Q. Where do you find your inspiration?
A. Much of my inspiration comes from both fellow Wedding/ Portraits Photographers and Fashion Photographers. I adore film photography, the way it handles light and the pastel palette of Fuji film. I still feel like it’s Christmas morning every time I download my film scans.
Q. And finally, what piece of advice would you like to give to newly engaged couples?
A. Enjoy this beautiful moment! Over a glass of wine and something delicious, sit down and picture what you want your wedding to look like. What type of day and experience do you want to have? Ask any married friends for some good advice on do’s and don’ts – most importantly have fun!!!
